The Catskills' Best Friday Night: Tacos, Local Beer and a Sunset That Refused to Behave
Some summer evenings take real planning. Others just show up and refuse to be anything less than perfect.
Last Friday at Belleayre Mountainwas the second kind. Warm mountain air, tacos from a food truck that had clearly done this before, cold local beer, and a sunset that seemed personally offended by the idea of anyone looking at their phone instead of the sky.
Genuinely, a 10 out of 10 Catskills evening. And the good news: Belleayre is doing it again this Friday, and every Friday through August.
Free Friday Night Music, With a Sunset That Won't Quit
Music on the Belle brings free live music to the Discovery Lodge every Friday night this summer, 6 to 9 PM. This Friday, July 31, it's The Saints, five musicians who've been playing together since 1989, running a set that swings from Bob Marley to Marvin Gaye to Van Morrison. Admission is free, which makes it one of the easiest wins of the entire summer calendar.
Here's the detail most people miss: Belleayre keeps the Catskill Thunder Gondola running until 7 PM on Friday nights specifically so you can catch golden hour from 3,400 feet up before the music even starts. Bring a blanket or a folding chair, stake out a spot on the lawn, and let the mountain do the rest.
What Made Last Friday Nearly Perfect
The taco truck kept everyone fed. The local beer kept everyone appropriately relaxed. Families, friends, and a healthy number of dogs spread out across the lawn, and the whole thing wrapped up with a sunset that genuinely looked like it was trying to win an award. In the interest of honesty: the band could have brought a little more energy to the stage. A summer crowd wants to get pulled in, not just played at. A touch more interaction would have turned a lovely evening into an unforgettable one.
And yet, somehow, the night was still a 10 out of 10 anyway.
That tells you everything about how good the setting actually is. When the mountain, the food, the people, and the sunset all show up at once, the band doesn't have to carry the whole night by itself. Belleayre becomes part of the performance whether anyone's tuning a guitar or not.
Turn It Into a Full Catskills Weekend
Music on the Belle is really just the opening act for a proper Catskills weekend. Spend the afternoon swimming at Belleayre Beach, hike one of the mountain trails, or ride the gondola up for the view before it becomes the sunset backdrop for everyone still down at the lawn. Then head to Discovery Lodge for tacos, live music, and whatever the sky decides to do that night.
Stay Close Enough to Skip the Drive Home
Alpine Four Season Lodge sits walking minutes from Belleayre Mountain, close enough that "one more song" doesn't turn into a two-hour drive afterward. Spend the rest of the weekend hiking, swimming, playing tennis, wandering the nearby villages, or just parked at the fire pit deciding nothing at all.
The Catskills don't need a complicated itinerary most weekends. Sometimes the whole formula is embarrassingly simple: a mountain, a taco, a cold local beer, live music, and a sunset that steals the show whether the band earns it or not.
See you Friday at Belleayre.
