Falling leaves, quiet mountains and the first signs of winter at Belleayre New York City has enough scary faces this Halloween. Up here in the Catskills, the only thing falling from the sky is leaves. The bold reds and oranges of peak foliage are giving way to the softer beauty of late October. Leaves drift through the mountain air, the forest floor turns into a colorful carpet, and the whole valley settles into that magical pause between autumn and winter.
The crowds are thinning. The roads are quiet. And nature seems to be telling everyone to slow down. Frankly, we think this is wonderful.
The Best Halloween Costume? Being Completely Unavailable.
While the city gears up for packed sidewalks and people dressed as things you’d rather not meet in a dark alley, our biggest excitement at Alpine Four Season Lodge is watching another thousand leaves come down. We love every minute of it.
Picture waking up surrounded by mountains, coffee in hand, as the last golden leaves drift past your window. No traffic. No crowds. No appointments. Just fresh mountain air and the luxury of doing absolutely nothing. Sometimes the best way to celebrate Halloween is to disappear. Preferably somewhere with a comfortable bed and a mountain view.
What to Do Around Belleayre This Week
🥾 Hike before the snow arrives. With fewer leaves on the trees, the trails around Belleayre Mountain open up views you can’t see in summer. Bring a layer, good shoes and a little motivation.
🎃 Catch Woodstock’s Halloween spirit. Woodstock is always colorful, but Halloween takes it to another level. Browse the independent shops and galleries, and enjoy the characters wandering through town. Costumes are optional. People-watching is practically mandatory.
☕ Wander the villages. Phoenicia, Margaretville and Fleischmanns are made for slow afternoons: a good coffee, a long lunch, a bookstore browse and the scenic route home. There’s no need to rush. That’s rather the point.
From Falling Leaves to Falling Snow
Just up the mountain, Belleayre is already getting ready for winter. As soon as the temperatures drop for good, the snowmaking starts, and those colorful slopes begin turning into a winter playground.
One week we’re raking leaves. The next, we’re looking for our ski boots.
Hopefully we remember where we put them. Follow Belleayre’s conditions page for snowmaking and opening updates.
The Sweet Spot Between Two Seasons
This short window between foliage and ski season belongs to people who love quiet mornings, long walks, cozy evenings and a glass of wine by the fire. Cook something delicious. Spend time together. Watch the seasons change. And unlike Halloween in the city, nobody is going to jump out from behind a tree in a terrifying mask. Well, probably not.
