Late Fall, Softly Glowing
Late fall has a beauty all its own. The last orange and red leaves hold on to the branches. The forest floor turns a deep, warm rust. Mountain ridges peek through the trees, and that golden late-afternoon light makes even your phone think it’s a professional camera.
Around Highmount and Belleayre, we’re now past peak. The higher elevations are bare, while color lingers lower in the valleys. It’s quieter, cozier and wonderfully unhurried, the season when the Catskills take a deep breath before winter.

Your Midweek Catskills Getaway, Sorted
Make Alpine Four Season Lodge in Highmount, NY your home base for two or three nights. That’s enough time to unpack, explore and stop treating relaxation like something you have to finish before lunch.
🚗 Day one: Arrive and settle in.
Take the scenic drive through the mountains, drop your bags and give yourself an evening with no agenda. A good book counts as a plan. So does deciding where to eat.
Phoenicia Diner has very yummy pancakes…..a must try.
🥾 Day two: Breakfast, a walk and plenty of looking around.
Start with breakfast at the Phoenicia Diner, then head to the Ashokan Rail Trail for reservoir views and a walk through the late-fall woods. The trail is open sunrise to sunset, year-round.
Take a short stroll or stretch your legs a little longer. Nobody expects you to cover all 11.5 miles. We certainly aren’t checking.
🛍️ Day three: One more stop.
Wander Phoenicia or Margaretville, browse wherever catches your eye and enjoy the drive. Leave room for the unexpected: a beautiful view, a shop you hadn’t noticed, or something delicious you absolutely need for the road.
That’s what a weekday escape gives you: time to actually enjoy being here.
