We think we got the better deal.
Up here in Highmount the mornings have gone crisp, the maples are starting to blush, and coffee tastes twice as good in a sweater. This is the week to book your Catskills fall getaway, and the calendar is stacked.
Here is your game plan.
Fall becomes the most picturesque camera opportunity at Belleayre mountain.
Chase the Color
Fall color is starting to turn across New York, and the map changes week by week. Check the I LOVE NY Fall Foliage Report, updated every Wednesday afternoon, to see where it is popping. Peak is still on its way. We asked Mother Nature for a firm date, no answer yet.
The Midweek Move
Nobody talks about a Tuesday in the mountains. They should. Quieter trails, open tables, and the best seat by the fire has your name on it. Grab a coffee, then pick one of Belleayre Mountain's hiking trails, minutes from the lodge. Choose the one that matches your energy. This is a walk in the woods, not a performance review.
Lunch at Bettina in Phoenicia. Take the long way back through the valley.
Evening? The Print House in Fleischmanns pours a serious cocktail over a stack of vinyl.
Two or three nights. No alarm clock. That is the whole plan.
This Weekend: Gondola Up, Harvest Down
Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27
Ride the gondola. Belleayre's Catskill Thunder scenic gondola runs Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting. Adults ride round trip for $20. Summit views, a picnic, zero leg day. Your legs take a break. Your camera works overtime.
Hit the harvest in Delhi. On Saturday the Delhi Harvest Festival takes over Main Street and Courthouse Square from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Local makers, farmers and artisans, food vendors all day, and live music from Bobby Curious in the afternoon. Buy a pie for the drive home. That counts as planning ahead.
Our move: festival Saturday, summit Sunday, fireplace in between.
Visit a farmers market, find your favourite pumpkin.
Save the Date: Belleayre Fall Festival
October 3, 4, 10 and 11 | 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Free admission, free parking
The Belleayre Fall Festival is the big one. Live music, craft vendors, a food truck village and gondola rides. Pumpkin painting and a climbing wall for the kids. Brews & Views for the grown-ups.
There is also a stein-holding contest and a pie-eating contest. Pick your sport.
