🚗 Day 1: Take the Long Way In
Skip the highway rush. Head west on Route 28, then wind along Route 30 past the Pepacton Reservoir, with miles of water mirroring the gold hillsides. It might be the most underrated fall drive in New York. Check in at the lodge in Highmount, pour something warm, and watch the light go orange over the mountains.
🔥 Day 2: Climb a Fire Tower
Want a view nobody else has today? Hike Balsam Lake Mountain, home to a 47-foot fire tower built in 1930. It’s a real climb, about 1,200 feet of elevation gain, but the 360-degree view of the Catskills at peak color is worth every step. Afterward, refuel in Margaretville or Fleischmanns. You’ve earned it.

🎬 Day 3: Film or Funny?
This week you get both.
Woodstock Film Festival, October 14–18: Independent films and filmmaker talks across Woodstock, Saugerties, Rosendale and Kingston. Weekday screenings are your best shot at a good seat.
